From time to time tooth extraction may become necessary to remove seriously damaged teeth due to tooth decay, a fractured or broken tooth.
Common causes for tooth extraction include:
Deep decay that cannot be restored
A significant chip or crack in the tooth
An injury to the tooth
A failed root canal treatment (RCT) procedure
To reduce crowding or support orthodontic treatment
To prepare space for a denture
Impacted wisdom tooth
If you’re unsure about whether you need a tooth extraction, it’s always best to consult with your dentist for a professional assessment.
Other treatment choices include:
No treatment at all: The dentist will discuss the potential risks and implications of choosing this option.
Restorations with fillings: If the tooth is suitable, a filling may be used to restore its function and appearance.
Root Canal Treatment: If the tooth is salvageable, root canal treatment may be recommended to save it.
Complex Extractions: For more complicated extractions, a referral to a specialist or hospital may be necessary.
Your dentist will assess your specific situation and guide you through the best options for your oral health.
Tooth extraction involves the following steps:
X-rays: The dentist will take X-rays to assess the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues. This helps determine whether the tooth can be restored or if extraction is necessary.
Local Anaesthesia: The dentist will administer local anaesthesia to numb the affected area, ensuring that you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
Extraction: Using special dental instruments, the dentist will carefully loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. For more complicated extractions, such as impacted teeth, surgical techniques may be required.
After the extraction, the dentist will provide instructions for aftercare to ensure proper healing.
Treatment Risks & Limitations:
They might include, but are not limited to:
Pain/Discomfort with swelling or bruising, which may last up to 2 weeks.
Infection of the extraction site (such as a dry socket), requiring additional treatment or antibiotics.
Bleeding from the extraction site, typically short-lived and minimal.
Damage to nerves running close by, particularly in the case of wisdom tooth extractions.
The tooth root tip may break off in small pieces during extraction, potentially requiring more surgery or a referral to a specialist.
Trauma, fracture, chipping, or loosening of neighbouring teeth or crowns.
Temporary numbness in the area.
Changes in the bite or jaw joint difficulties (such as TMJ problems or TMD).
Reactions to anaesthetics, chemicals, or medications used during the procedure.
It is important to follow aftercare instructions and consult your dentist if any of these issues arise.
Post-Extraction Care:
You should expect some discomfort, bleeding, swelling, and bruising for the first 24-48 hours after the extraction.
Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain relief, such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol, is usually sufficient for discomfort. We recommend alternating between Paracetamol and Ibuprofen as per the recommended dose.
Blood clot formation: A blood clot will form at the extraction site, and this clot is vital to the healing process. To keep the clot intact:
Avoid touching the extraction site with your tongue or fingers.
Do not drink liquids through a straw.
Avoid spitting vigorously.
Sneezing and blowing your nose: Blowing your nose or sneezing violently can dislodge the blood clot and impair healing. If you have an upper respiratory infection or suffer from allergies, be sure to have the appropriate sinus medication on hand.
Oral hygiene: Do not rinse your mouth the day of the surgery or brush or floss next to the extraction site.
Avoid harmful habits: Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or allowing food particles to pack into the tooth’s socket, as these can significantly affect the healing process, increase the risk of infection, and amplify pain.
Rest and recovery: Relax and avoid strenuous exercise during your recovery period.
If you experience any unusual symptoms or if pain and swelling do not subside after the first few days, contact your dentist for advice.
24 hours following the procedure
Post-Extraction Care:
Eating: Once the numbness has worn off, you should begin eating, as nourishment is important for the healing process. For the first 48 hours, limit your diet to soft foods such as yoghurt, soft soups, ice cream, or soft-cooked eggs. This will help avoid irritation or injury to the extraction site.
Antibiotics: If antibiotics were prescribed, continue taking them for the full duration, even if all symptoms and signs of infection have gone. This ensures the infection is completely treated and reduces the risk of complications.
Reducing Swelling: To help reduce swelling and inflammation, rinse gently with warm salty water. Gently swish the solution around your mouth 2-3 times per day, after breakfast and dinner, for the week following the extraction.
Brushing and Flossing: Continue brushing and flossing the other areas of your mouth as you normally would, taking care not to disturb the extraction site.
If you have any concerns or notice any complications, please contact your dentist for further advice or treatment.
If you are concerned and require further advice, or if you experience any of the following, please call us immediately:
Heavy or increased bleeding
Pain or swelling that increases or continues beyond two or three days

We are here to help and ensure your recovery is smooth and without complications.
