Step-by-Step Whitening Tray Instructions
You’ve taken the first step toward a brighter, more confident smile. To help you achieve the best possible results with your at-home whitening kit from Sunna Dental, we’ve put together a simple and effective guide.
Whether you’re using a day kit or overnight whitening tray, following these steps will ensure a safe, comfortable, and lasting result.
Begin with Clean Teeth
Brush and floss thoroughly to remove plaque and ensure optimal gel contact with the enamel.
Prepare the Gel Syringe
Remove one syringe from the kit, twist off the cap, and securely attach the dispensing tip.
Apply the Whitening Gel
Carefully position the tray over your teeth, pressing gently for a snug, comfortable fit.
Insert the Tray
Carefully position the tray over your teeth, pressing gently for a snug, comfortable fit.
Remove Excess Gel
Use a clean finger, tissue, or soft toothbrush to wipe away any overflow from your gums to prevent irritation.
Wear as Directed
- Day Whitening Kits: Wear once per day for 45 minutes.
- Night Whitening Kits: Wear overnight while you sleep.
Follow the instructions given by your Sunna Dental clinician.
Post-Treatment Rinse
After each session, remove the tray, rinse your mouth and the tray with lukewarm water to avoid temperature sensitivity.
Repeat Daily
Continue this process daily until all whitening gel has been used for best results.

What to Avoid After Whitening
For at least 48 hours post-treatment, your teeth are more porous and susceptible to staining. Please avoid:
- Smoking or vaping
- Dark-coloured beverages: coffee, tea, red wine, cola
- Deeply pigmented foods: tomato sauces, soy sauce, berries, beetroot
- Coloured condiments like ketchup and balsamic vinegar
How Long Will Your Whitening Last?
Whitening isn’t permanent, but proper maintenance can extend your results. Here’s what to expect:
- You may notice your teeth appear extra bright right after treatment due to slight dehydration. This will normalise within a couple of days.
- Lifestyle choices such as smoking, coffee or wine consumption, and poor oral hygiene can cause discolouration to return faster.
- Results typically last 6–12 months. We recommend regular touch-up treatments using top-up syringes, available at Sunna Dental.

What If I Experience Sensitivity After Teeth Whitening?
It’s completely normal to experience mild sensitivity to hot or cold drinks following a whitening treatment—this usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. To ease discomfort, we recommend using a desensitising toothpaste such as Sensodyne. If your gums feel tender or irritated, avoid brushing the affected area until the sensitivity improves. If symptoms persist beyond a couple of days, contact Sunna Dental in Birmingham for personalised advice.
